💜 Celebrating Jungkook’s Return with His Favorite Noodles
On June 11th, 2025, the long wait was finally over - BTS’s Jungkook and Jimin, were officially discharged from his military service. ARMYs around the world rejoiced, trended hashtags, and shared their excitement through fan art, heartfelt letters, videos, and… food!
What better way to welcome Jungkook back than with a homemade bowl of his favorite noodles?
In Korea, noodles are usually eaten when celebrating something (or everyday haha).
[captured from Jungkook’s live streaming]
In one of his past livestreams, Jungkook shared a simple yet incredibly flavorful recipe that had fans scrambling to try it out at home. It’s now famously known as:
Buldak Perilla Oil Makguksu (불닭 들기름 막국수)
This noodle dish is refreshing, spicy, nutty, and comforting - the perfect Jungkook-style meal: practical, punchy, and undeniably charming.
Ingredients
One of the best things about this recipe is its flexibility. Jungkook himself didn’t use exact measurements or fancy techniques - he just made use of what he had at home. So don’t worry if you don’t have the exact ingredients; it’s all about balance and flavor harmony.
Noodles
- Buckwheat noodles (Makguksu or Soba style)
Sauce
- Perilla oil – 4 Tbsp
- Cham sauce – 2 Tbsp
(We didn’t have Cham sauce, so we recreated it by mixing:)- Soy sauce – 2 Tbsp
- Vinegar – 1 Tbsp
- Sugar – 1 Tbsp
- Buldak sauce – 1 Tbsp
(Adjust based on your spice level!) - Buldak mayo (optional – we didn’t have it)
- 1 egg yolk (added at the end)
Toppings
- Crushed seasoned seaweed (we used snack-size packs)
- Optional: sesame seeds, green onions
Step-by-Step: How We Recreated Jungkook’s Noodles
1. Boil the Buckwheat Noodles
Start by boiling your buckwheat noodles according to the package directions (usually 3–5 minutes). Once they’re cooked through, immediately rinse them under cold water.
This not only stops the cooking process but also removes excess starch, leaving the noodles with that chewy and refreshing texture that’s so essential in Korean-style cold noodles.
💡 Rinse several times in cold water until the water runs clear. It’ll really help with the texture.
2. Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, combine your sauce ingredients. Since we didn’t have Cham sauce, we used the common homemade mix:
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp vinegar
- 1 Tbsp sugar
To that base, we added:
- 4 Tbsp perilla oil
- 1 Tbsp Buldak sauce
Mix everything well.
If you have Buldak mayo, you can add a spoonful. Jungkook did, but since we didn’t have any, we skipped it and focused on the yolk instead.
3. Toss and Mix
In a large bowl, place the rinsed and drained buckwheat noodles. Pour the sauce all over and toss thoroughly.
4. Add the Seaweed & Serve
Originally, Jungkook used a seaweed shredder box to top his noodles with thin seaweed slices. Since we didn’t have one, we got creative.
We simply took a bag of seasoned seaweed snacks, crushed them in the bag, and sprinkled them on top. You can also mix them directly into the noodles for added umami.
Optionally, top with:
- Toasted sesame seeds
- Thinly sliced green onions
- Soft-boiled egg halves
[add dry seaweed crumbs to the noodle and mix well]
Then, crack a fresh egg yolk on top and gently mix it in with chopsticks or tongs. The yolk adds richness and a slightly creamy mouthfeel that mellows out the heat from the Buldak sauce.
🧡 Mixing the yolk in gives the noodles a beautifully glossy coating and deepens the flavor.
So… How Did It Taste?
Absolutely amazing. The perilla oil added a nutty depth, almost like toasted sesame but earthier. The Buldak sauce delivered the signature spicy punch, and the egg yolk made everything richer and silkier.
Combined with the chewy cold noodles and savory seaweed crunch, it was the ultimate fusion of texture and flavor - spicy, nutty, umami, cool, and comforting.
Even with substitutions and limited pantry ingredients, the final result was seriously restaurant-quality. No exaggeration.
Ingredient Tips & Substitutions
This dish is perfect for adapting based on what you have at home. Here are a few swaps:
Ingredient | Substitute Ideas |
---|---|
Perilla oil | Toasted sesame oil |
Cham sauce | Soy sauce + vinegar + sugar combo |
Buldak sauce | Gochujang, chili oil, or spicy sriracha |

Seaweed | Nori, furikake, or roasted laver flakes |
Egg yolk | Soft-boiled egg or poached egg |

This recipe captures Jungkook’s vibe so well:
- Effortless: It looks casual but tastes complex.
- Adaptable: He used what he had, like any of us.
- Bold: The Buldak sauce adds serious attitude.
- Balanced: Sweet yet powerful.
It also reflects his humble and grounded nature. Despite being a global superstar, he still cooks for himself using whatever he has at home. There’s something really special about that.
How to Serve It
If you want the full experience, here’s how to serve:
- Plate in a deep black ceramic bowl for contrast.
- Add sesame seeds or scallions for color.
- Serve with cold barley tea (보리차) or Korean pickles.
- Light a candle and stream BTS while eating.
Worthy Tip
Want to show off your creation? Arrange the noodles neatly, drizzle a little extra perilla oil, and drop the yolk in the center. Sprinkle crushed seaweed all over and snap your shot from above.
